The Big Blue 150 x 100 cms This painting is inspired by my personal experience freediving at Princess Alice Bank, a seamount 45 nautical miles from the Azores, where I live during the summer. Several different species gather here, in this underwater mountain, 30 meters to the sea surface, surrounded by great depths of many thousand meters. The mobula tarapacana rays are some of my favourite animals to swim with. They are curious and come near us. The whale sharks, graciously swimming, giant as they are, yet so gentle. This painting portraits a calm day at sea. The sun rays are vertical, it's about mid day. The sea surface is calm, thus the sun rays are straight lines, this is my perspective from around 20 meters depth.

This painting taps into the rich underwater world. It's all happening at the same time, a bait ball, the small fish circling, the big fish hunting, the birds fishing swimming under water. And at the same time, we can also see it in a different scale, a dolphin pod playing, or sharks hunting, or at even a bigger scale, sperm whales socialising. Jumping from the rocks, into the deep blue. By the coast the water has a greenish blue colour, brightened by the sun rays dancing through the water column.
